Prayer for a Winter Morning

Father, we praise you for extending your mercies to us for another day.

God, we praise you for the fellowship of the saints, for the gift of your Church, and for the unique gifts you have bestowed on each one of us so that when we are together we are whole.

God, we praise you for the beauty of your creation - for your creativity displayed in everything from the ever-changing colors of the sunrise to the mesmerizing light of the fire to tiny little poodles with no teeth who eat their food one kibble at a time.  God, you have blessed us with so many beautifully unnecessary things that I can't help but think they are purely for our delight.

God, we praise you for your provision - for our comfortable shelter from the cold, for the health and strength to work and make a living and for the sustenance that gives us strength so we can serve you.

God, we praise you for the seasons.  We praise you for the dark, cold death of winter and the hope we have that spring is coming.  God, we praise you for the way the seasons shout the testimony of your work in the lives of your children - that when our hearts are as cold as ice and our fruitful lives are as barren as these trees, that we can still cling to the hope that spring is coming - that YOU are coming - and that you will redeem our winters, melt the ice from our hearts and breathe new life into us again.

And so we come before you this morning.  We come in the hope of spring.

God, we are all so broken - some are angry, some are tired, some are hurting, some are depressed, some are apathetic, some are hard-hearted.  And yet you call us to come.

God, we are all idolaters.  We are addicted to our idolatrous habits.  Some are addicted to the praise of man.  Some are addicted to success and accomplishment.  Some are addicted to pornography, some are addicted to alcohol, some are addicted to sympathy.  We pursue every meaningless thing under the sun.  And yet you call us to come.

God, we are all sinners.  We are proud, vain, arrogant, selfish, we harbor hate in our hearts, we are unforgiving, we are overtaken with lust, we gossip and slander.  And yet you call us to come.

You call us....

You call us sons and you call us daughters.  You call us fellow heirs with Christ and members of the household of God.  You call us holy and blameless.  You call us your body, the Church.  You call us beloved.  You call us all of these things.  And so we come.

We come in the powerful name of Jesus.  We come by the power of his blood shed for us.  We come in the victory of his resurrection.  We come through the leading of the Spirit.  We come not because of who we are but because of who YOU are.

Meet us as we come.  Meet us in the midst of our brokenness, our addictions and our sin.  May your name be glorified throughout this day.  May we be consciously aware of the blessing of your grace and of the fellowship of the Church.  And may you be honored in each one of our lives.

We ask you to do this in the powerful name of Jesus.

Winter Song

Singing this beautiful winter song today.

“This is my winter song to you. The storm is coming soon; it rolls in from the sea. My voice, a beacon in the night. My words will be your light. To carry you to me.  I still believe in summer days.  The seasons always change.  And life will find a way.”

We have hope in the storm. Love is alive. Spring is coming.

Thanks to my awesome friend Denise for introducing me to this song/video.  You should check out her blog.  Seriously.  It's top 5, for sure.
